Philipp Alexander Frings

Born in 2004, Philipp comes from a family of professional musicians. He received his first clarinet lessons at the age of 4 from his father. From 2018 to 2024, he pursued a junior studies program at the Robert Schumann University of Music in Düsseldorf with Martin Bewersdorff (Schumann Junior Institute). Since 2024, he has been studying at the Berlin University of the Arts under Professor François Benda.

Philipp has won several national and international competitions, including the gold medal at the 34th Luxembourg Competition for Young Soloists, the national competition “Jugend musiziert,” Beethoven Bonnensis, International France Music Competition Paris, Concorso Internazionale per Giovani Musicisti “Città di Massa,” Concorso internazionale di esecuzione musicale PREMIO CITTA’ DI PADOVA, Royal Maas International Competition, and the International Mozart Competition Vienna.

In the “Chamber Music” category, Philipp A. Frings has been awarded the special prize of the Robert and Clara Schumann Association Leipzig and the Hermann J. Abs Prize. The young clarinetist is a scholarship holder of the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben, the Richard Wagner Scholarship Foundation, the Cologne Gymnasium and Foundation Fund, the Johs. Kölln Foundation, the PE Förderungen für Studierende der Musik e.V., the Lyra Foundation (Switzerland), and the Werner Richard – Dr. Carl Dörken Foundation.

Philipp gained his first symphony orchestra experience with the Children’s Orchestra NRW and the Orchestra of the Young Academy Rostock. From 2018 to 2021, he was a member of the State Youth Orchestra NRW.

Significant inspirations have come from lessons with renowned artists and professors, including Prof. François Benda, Prof. Johann Hindler, Prof. Kilian Herold, Prof. Norbert Kaiser, Prof. Johannes Gmeinder, Prof. Ralph Manno, Prof. Shirley Brill, and Prof. Francesco Negrini, as well as solo performances with the Lower Rhine Symphony Orchestra.
